Bernadette Uttaq Date of Birth:October 25
Place Born:
Qi'nguq area, on the Nuvuk point
Parents:

Mother ~ Arnatsiaq
Father ~ Qayalik and Sallari

I was born in Netsilik at a place called Qi'nguq during the month of October. I was born on October 25. My mother's name is Arnatsiaq her English name is Melanie, and my Father's name is Qayalik and Sallaei. I was born on October 25 when we lived in igloos. I was born when the sea ice was thick enough to walk on.

As I was born in Qi'nguq, just before Qi'nguq there's a small bay, right at Qi'nguq, where there is a point. That is where I was born. It is called Nuvuk, and it is part of Qi'nguq.

Place Names of the Netsilik Area

There is also a place called Niaqurnaarjuk, it is located near the shore, also behind it there is a place called Tugaaqturvik, it is also called Tikirarjuannuaq, but Neeveovak had told me that it wasn't called Tikirajuannuaq, it was called Tikirarjuaq by our ancestors. The chars would swim down the river during the spring through Qi'nguq. People do some fishing in Qi'nguq, you probably know the place called Tikirarjunnuaq, they camp there during the spring and do some fishing using ice chisel or ice auger. Near this place there;s another place called Itibliarik; this is another camping area. Close to it is another place called Aariaq, Quayaauts' family camps there during the spring, which is where people put their nets. Behind it there's a place called Kitbag. In Aariaq people do some fishing. They trap fish and catch fish with fish spears in the bay.

There's a place called Nalluq, this place is along the Netsilik River. The caribou swim across the river migrating back after returning from their calving area. The men hunt caribou while the caribou are swimming across the river. They'd hunt with their kayaks. This was before the rifles were brought up. That is what it is called Nalluq, because caribou are swimming across the river. We'd camp way up on top of the hill away from the river. The men would wait for caribou to pass by near the river. They's run to their kayak and hunt caribou.

The White Rock

Part of Nalluq there is another camping area. Across the river there is a white sandy rock, it is bigger than that rock we see right there, I have seen it before, it is called kahagauhuituq (no one touches it). Long ago people used to have taboos, so no one is allowed to touch that rock. Even though it is not to be touched, when my father was a child he was put on that rock sitting down. That I don't understand, I wonder why?

There is a rock called kahagauhuituq across the Netsilik River near the land. It's a big whitish rock. I can go and see it, I know where it is, if only I was there.

Location of the Netsilik Area

Along the Netsilik River on the upper river there is a shallow part, when there is a shallow part we call it itimniq. It is right near a camping area. That is where they wait for caribou to cross the river. It is call itimniq. It is a shallow part and flat.
Across from it there is another place called Naulingiarvik. It is a deep part. It is deep right near the land. The men would spear fish in the area, as they did not have nets that time and they couldn't make a fishing weir because it was too deep. They would fish when the fish were going back up the river to the lake. It is called Naulingiarvik. Only if I'm there I can say it is right here, you can't know where it is when we are here in Taloyoak. At the camping area where they wait for caribou to cross the river on the upper mainland near Itimnirut, the Netsilik River has a lot of names, but I don't know some of the names of the locations.

There's another place called Ariaq it is roundish. Ariaq is part of Netsilik Lake. There is another place called Tikiraqjuaq, meaning point, it is between Netsilik Lake and Qikiqtaqtuuq. That is one point that is connected with Netsilik and Qikirtartuuq. There is a river in Qi'nguq it is called Kuugaarjuk, and the one before that, I think it is called Tikirarjuaq, it has a nice dark colored land. This place is called Qirnaluk.

There's a river flowing from Pangnirtuuq, it is called Siirtiniligaarjuk. Also another place close to it where there is a mountain where there is a small fall, this place is called Quuttik. Also behind Qi'nguq in Netsilik there are a lot of names but I don't know some of them. If you people had questioned my aunt's husband while he was still alive. He knows the place very well, every little part even the islands. These are the places I know, also the mountains in camp 24, its mountains are very high. I have heard they were called Kingarjuaq.
We used to camp at an island, a big island, I think it is called Qikirtarjuaq, it is at the end of Kuugaarjuk.
There are many more names, but those are the only ones that I know. There are many more names that I don't know about.
